  Athletic Opportunities

Countless numbers of football, basketball, lacrosse, and soccer players will officially retire this year at the beaten old age of seventeen.  They will have resigned themselves to be too poor of an athlete to compete in Collegiate Varsity athletics.  But just as many high school athletes (and their parents) may receive a letter from a school such as NYU offering a full scholarship to pursue Fencing.  Or perhaps Harvard, who is not quite impressed with your GPA, will overlook your pitiful 3.85 and choose to admit you based on your Rowing ability.  Many of those recently retired tight ends, quarterbacks, midfielders, and goalies will transfer their talents and athletic interest to golf, equestrian, track and field, cross country, swimming and diving, and dozens of other unfamiliar athletic opportunities.

Such opportunities offer high school students (athletes or not) an under appreciated alternative that enables them to continue (or begin) a lifelong pursuit of athletics.  These sports can also offer high school students who may not consider themselves “college material” a chance to gain admission to a highly selective school that just happens to be seeking very skilled javelin throwers or male gymnasts.  These opportunities can provide a back door to pursue a college education, a scholarship, or admission to highly selective schools.  A former football player’s contempt for track could turn into a lifelong passion for running.  Some may even earn the chance to throw, run, race, wrestle, row, climb, or dance for your country.

A list of resources that may help an aspiring collegiate athlete can be found below.  It is often recommended that students interested in a particular athletic program at a particular university contact assistant coaches of that program to begin a regulated recruiting and informational process.  Students and parents should take an active role in contacting coaches throughout the summer prior to a student’s senior year of high school.

 Tip of the Month Minimize

Begin your day right

Want to see almost immediate improvement in your sports and fitness?  Then here's what you do: EAT BREAKFAST!

Studies show that kids who eat breakfast are leaner and healthier than those who don't.  Getting your metabolism off to a good start is important in controlling the amount of sugar that is in your blood.  When you don't eat your body goes into starvation and eventually you will have cravings for something to eat.  Now, normal hunger is a good thing. Craving sugar and starch is not!   And that's exactly what happens when you go without eating for long periods of time.

Sugar is a quick fix, so it is hard to avoid it once you deny yourself adequate nutrition.  Unfortunately, most traditional breakfast foods aren't that good, so even if you do eat breakfast you may run into the same problem of craving the wrong stuff.  We look for foods that are high in nutrition like yogurt, whole grains, eggs, fruit and veggies.

Try a veggie omelette or a piece of fruit with some yogurt.  Then be sure to eat good foods throughout the day.

We believe that all kids should eat like Olympians!  If you do, you'll not only be healthier and perform better on the field, but you'll develop good habits that will last a lifetime.

Summer Smoothie

by Holly Bronco

Who doesn't love a great smoothie?  Here's one you can enjoy all summer long.  It has no added sugar and is packed with protein!

Ingredients
8oz. Unsweetened Almond Milk (chocolate or vanilla)

1 tbsp natural peanut butter

½ banana (sliced and frozen)

*2 tbsp low-fat Greek style yogurt

*cinnamon or vanilla

*berries (frozen or fresh)

Directions
Simply put all ingredients in a good blender or smoothie machine and blend until smooth.

*Try adding the yogurt for a protein boost

*Add some cinnamon or vanilla for a touch of sweetness

*Use crushed ice or frozen fruit to thicken your smoothie

To Serve
Drink this right away or make it ahead of time and just shake it up before using.  We like to make this first thing in the morning before our first workout of the day.
