Who loses weight and keeps it off?

For the past two decades I have made my living by confronting one primary issue: losing weight.  It's true that I have had many athletes and hardcore fitness types who have hired me to kick their ass and get them ready for competition, but for the most part my work has centered around weight loss and food. 

So, I thought I'd share a little of that experience with you, in order to shed some light on what traits I believe are necessary if one is to be successful at weight loss goals.  There is no question that there are certain types of people who realize long term results, while othere struggle. Here is what I know:

People who are good problem solvers do well with difficult goals.  Business owners, Executives, busy Moms, etc.  Of course, there are exceptions.  If a busy mom is disorganized she does not fit into the category of good problem solver. Disorganized is disorganized - enough said.

People who make excuses do not do well with weight loss.

People who want others to share in the responsibility don't do well.  Weight loss isn't a team thing.  Quite frankly, no one else cares. That being said, those with a good support system do exceptionally well. It is always nice to get some encouragement.  We should all reach out to someone each day and simply say, "hey, you're doing a great job.  I believe in you."  It can change their world.

People who are patient and prepared do very well.  The fact is, it takes time to see long term results.  And we all struggle at times, so being prepared will put you at an advantage when you are tempted, in a pinch or stressed.  Having apples and cottage cheese in the frig. for example will give you a healthy option.  Otherwise, you'll grab whatever is there!

Folks who want things in a hurry struggle the most I think.  Bootcamp type fitness programs can be a quick fix for these folks, but the real trick is to take the momentum from a class like this and run with it.  Our Bootcamps are designed to teach nutrition and long term fitness beyond the class structure.

Finally, people who rely on exercise to lose weight NEVER succeed in the long run.  Diet is the only answer to weight loss. Once you get to an ideal weight, exercise can keep you there.  And of course, it will make you healthier no matter what your weight is.

Just some info. here that I hope will help you to identify your odds.  If you find you are on the wrong side of the fence, there is hope.  You can always do something about your situation if you really want to.  It may require change, however.  And that's the hardest thing of all.

Don't Confuse Thirst With Hunger!

Many people grab food or snacks instead of fluids. Keep water handy and you will be more likely to hydrate properly throughout the day. I advise clients to keep to a schedule for eating, and drink water regularly- eliminating the guesswork.

To help keep to a regular eating schedule, keep an apple and some almonds with you so that you are never pinched for a beneficial snack. Being prepared will eliminate wasted time searching for good food in unfamiliar territory.

Keep your eating plan simple. Choose foods that are nutritious, simple to prepare, keep well, and pack easily. Your food should fuel your day, not rule your day! This applies to your kid’s meals as well.
